I took the picture from above in 2015. My family was selling the farm in York, Pennsylvania, on which I grew up and where Mark and I had our wedding reception. As we said good-bye to a place I loved, I took pictures of things that were special. This hinge is part of a door from the barns torn down at the York Fairgrounds. Those of us from York are very proud of our local fair as it was the birthplace of American fairs in 1765. We believe the barns were built around the late 1880s but we don’t know the exact age or the doors, latches and hinges we took from the original barns as they were torn down when I was a kid. To me the doors always reminded me of the past and the future, much like the idea that a hinge connects two things together. I have a bunch of pictures of hinges, doors, and latches from those last days on the farm; they have recently taken on a new and richer meaning as we prepare for the summer Bible study through the book of Ephesians, called Hinged: Vitally Connected to Christ and His Church.
Karen Hodge, the National director of Women’s Ministries in the PCA, describes why this study is so important for us to take a deep dive into.
“Our worship informs our walk. The hinge point is in Ephesians 4:1, ‘I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.’ The work of God on our behalf, hinges to our walk as a believer. Our position ‘in Christ,’ connects to our practices in the home, church, and workplace. Our blessings from Christ are the pivot point to our behavior: the way we talk, forgive, and love each other. All Christ has done Getting Ready for us overflows to the praise of His glory through us. Ephesians plumbs the height, depth, and width of living the content of the gospel in the context of community.”
